Description of Area in & around Oliva
About Oliva
Oliva is about half way between Valencia and Alicante (75 km from Valencia airport and 100 km from Alicante airport) and is surrounded by orange and lemon groves. It is situated on the lesser-known Costa Azahar (Orange Blossom Coast) just north of the Costa Blanca. Oliva is a ‘real’ Spanish town, not just a holiday resort.
Oliva comprises three separate parts. The old town (which is mainly residential and dates back to the 15th Century) is very picturesque with narrow winding streets leading up towards an old castle perched on a hilltop.
The main (‘new’) town is a more modern development and is approximately 10 minutes’ walk from the apartment. Here you will find the main shopping area, including large supermarkets and covered market (daily) for fresh produce: fish, meat, fruit, vegetables, etc. There is also an excellent open market, which is held every Friday. Also in this area there is a wide variety of restaurants and take-away outlets. Eating out in the area is cheap and good. A 3-course meal including wine costs about €7 per person.
Oliva beach forms the third part and lies beyond the ‘new’ town of Oliva. This is a long sandy beach (both clean and safe) which is 2 miles away from the Casa (45 minutes’ walk, few minutes by car or local bus). In the height of the season Oliva beach offers restaurants, cafés, beach bars and pedallos for hire. The bathing is very safe and there is an under-used Red Cross/Lifeguard station! The well patrolled beach has the European Blue Flag award. Foot showers and car parking are free. The beach runs continuously for many miles along which several other resorts are within easy reach.
Local Attractions
There are two 18-hole and two 9-hole golf courses within 45 minutes’ drive. Water sports, tennis, indoor and outdoor pools, cycle hire, horse riding, go-karting and quad biking are all available in the Oliva area.
Benidorm with its many attractions is a 40 minutes’ drive away. Situated also in this area are Mundomar (a marine park with dolphin shows), Aqualandia (a water park with several pools, rides and slides) and the largest theme park in the Mediterranean called Terra Mitica.
Inland from Oliva there is a safari park about a 20 minutes’ drive. For fantastic scenery, drive inland to Guadalest and Fonts d’Algar. Within walking distance from Guadalest is the most incredible wild animal sanctuary called El Arca.
Denia is 10 miles to the south where there is a ferry to the Balearic Islands. Gandia, which is 5 miles north, has a lovely pedestrianised shopping area and a huge beach.
Why not take a trip by train to the beautiful city of Valencia? Only one hour from here and well worth a visit. Or how about our local restaurant with dinner/cabaret/dancing and genuine Flamenco show at Viva Espana!
