Here you will find a tranquil hideaway in 28 one and two-bedroom villas on the edge of a lush jungle. This boutique resort, as the name suggests, sits atop a hill, amid pristine lawns overlooking the sea. You can while away sunny afternoons roaming the trails through 12 acres of gardens filled with exotic birds, fruit trees and fragrant, exotic plants. Ask the gardeners to pick a coconut and cut it open so you can revel in a healthy refreshment straight from nature.
To get to the beach, you may either take a car or a 10-minute walk down the hillside to San San Beach for some watersports. Or you can swim in the hotel pool and play tennis on lighted courts. A tennis pro can be your partner for $10 per hour or teach lessons to adults or children for a charge of $15 per hour. There is a children's play area near the tennis courts. Babysitters can be arranged to spend time with your children reading stories to them or taking them on walks. The fee for babysitting is $10 per eight-hour day and $2 per hour after 6 p.m. The staff needs 24-hour notice to make arrangements.
For those who want to explore the surrounding area, the staff can direct you to the the relaxing river rafting cruises on the Rio Grande. The two-and-a-half hour rides on these bamboo rafts was a practice started by Errol Flynn, the swashbuckling movie actor who kept an estate in the area. Want to know how the Jamaicans used the surrounding lush vegetation as ingredients for medical remedies throughout the ages? Have the hotel staff arrange for a Valley Hikes tour exploring the area's rainforest and Rio Grande valley highlands.
After working up an appetite after those activities, head to the hotel restaurant, which is nestled among the trees. The bamboo structure makes you feel as if you have escaped to a treetop hideaway equipped with a bartender serving frosty libations. But if you want to dine in your air-conditioned villa, a personal cook can serve up local dishes for you there.
Port Antonio is considered to be the birthplace of Jamaica’s tourism. At the end of the 19th century, Port Antonio burst onto the international stage as the banana capital of the world. Quickly, the town became known as the vacation spot for the world’s rich and famous and a haven for wealthy merchants who built their winter homes throughout Port Antonio. This wonderful spot was then glamorised by the Hollywood stars of the 1940s and 1950s . It was once the primary Jamaican destination for the movie stars, politician and tycoons.
Port Antonio still remains this quiet jewel, a perfect hideaway for people who don’t want to be the center of attention. Many famous early visitors were Rudyard Kipling, Ginger Rogers, Errol Flynn (who bought a nearby island), J.P Morgan and William Randolph Hearst, as well as many others. It is still frequented by movie stars and visitors looking for a quiet escape. It is a low-key peaceful spot surrounded by nature’s magical beauty.
