The Village near NERJA, Frigiliana, & particularly its Mudéjar quarter, is a showcase of the purest popular Arab architecture in the province of Málaga. Remains have also been found of human settlements dating back to Prehistoric times, around the end of the Neolithic era (3.000 years BC). There is proof that the Phoenicians & Romans settled here. The origin of the village goes back to the ninth and tenth centuries (BC), when a settlement was built around a castle that has unfortunately disappeared. Arab culture has left a lasting impression. From Medieval times, this settlement, known as Hins Challana during the Córdoba Caliphate or Fixniana during the Narazí Kingdom of Granada, has been based, economically speaking, on the production of silk worms to obtain highly sought after cloth, & of oil, raisins, almonds & figs.
