Description of Area in & around Estoi, Santa Barbara de Nexe
Estoi, The Algarve, Portugal
Carob, almond and olive trees abound and shepherds tending flocks can still be seen. Cork and pine forests inland, for nature and walkers. A twenty minute drive takes you to beaches, golf and all tourist amenities.
3km from the nearby town of Estoi, famous for the Palacio do Visconde (Pink Palace) and Roman site of Milrue. The small and ancient village of Estói should not be missed. Aside from the characteristic charm of the typical Algarvian village, the parish church, built on the site of a medieval chapel, dates from the 16th century and is well worth the visit.
Within easy walking distance of the village is the 18th century Estói Palace. This impressive, 28-room building is partially covered with intricate 19th century azulejo-tiles bearing luxurious floral designs or depicting scenes from classical mythology. The extensive gardens are laid out after the Baroque fashion and comprise several levels containing ornamental lakes, water-falls and flights of stone steps in addition to a great many marble and pottery statues.
Just less than a kilometre from Estói Palace, at Milreu, lie the ruins of a Roman Palace of the 3rd century AD. Here you can see the remains of a luxurious peristyle villa with rooms arranged around a central courtyard enclosed by a walkway of columns. Visible in the bathing chambers to the west of the courtyard and next to the remains of the baths are fragments of exquisite mosaics showing marine/fish motifs.
